Description
Palouse Falls and the Palouse River downstream. Created by the Lake Missoula floods, Palouse Falls is located in the Palouse Falls Natural Area. The basalt in the area was caused by lava flows. The area is characterized by interconnected and hanging flood-created coulees, cataracts, plunge pools, potholes, rock benches, buttes and pinnacles typical of scablands. Geologists estimate that the cycle of flooding and reformation of the lake lasted an average of 55 years and that an estimated 25 massive floods occurred over the 2,000-year period between 15,000 and 13,000 years ago.
